Your Eyes Are More Complex Than Computer – A Window To The World And The Soul

Ruth Chris

The eye is made up of so many parts. Like a camera, what we see from the outside is only a simple picture to what lies beneath. The overall function and design of the eye is much more than just a white ping-pong sized ball with a colorful space and a little black dot. Your eye is the window to the world. It takes thousands of ‘calculations’ so to speak. What you see is only a small part of the overall picture. The following is a summary of each part and its function.

-Eye socket Hollow space/opening. Holds and Supports the function of the eyeball itself

-Eyelid Skin over eyeball. This skin through muscular automatic and voluntarily movements. It acts in this capacity to help keep the eyeball moist and to keep it clean and free from debris.

-Eyelashes Tiny hairs framing at the end of the eyelid. The lashes although decorative are there for much more than holding mascara. Lashes work to catch dirt and minimized it’s entrance to the eyeball.

-Eyeball Ping-pong sized white part of the eye. The white part of the eye is made up of a tough material called sclera. It covers a huge part of the outer covering for the eye. The eye has noticeable tiny pink threads, (Blood Vessels) which deliver blood to the sclera.

-Cornea Clear/Transparent dome. This dome sits in front of the colored part of the eye. It help the eye focus as light passes through.

-The Iris The colored part controls how much light goes through the pupil

-The Pupil The Little Black Dot set in the center of the eye, the pupil is actually an opening into the inner parts, the size of this black dot is dependent on the amount of lights it’s exposed to. When the dot is smaller, it’s due to brighter light, thereby minimizing the amount of light that enters. When it’s larger, this is due to a darker area, in opening, it allows more light in, so you can see a little better in the dark.

-Anterior Chamber Not visible. The space between the cornea and the iris. The transparent fluid is there to nourish they eye.

-Retina Not visible. Processes what the eye sees. It receives the signals or information which is sent to the brain for understanding.

Your retina is at the far back part of the eye that takes the light the eye receives and changes it into nerve signals so the brain can understand what the eye is seeing. It uses cells called rods and cones to process light. In all there are about 120 million rods and 7 million cones per eye.

-Lens Not visible. Like a camera, the lens processes and captures the image. It is held by fibers which are attached to muscles called ciliary muscles. It actually changes the size and shape of the lens.

-Vitreous Body Not visible. This sits behind the lens, and forms two thirds of the eye’s volume and gives the eye its shape. It’s filled with a clear, jelly-like material called the vitreous humor.

-Rods Not visible.Works the processing of black, white, and shades of gray.

-Cones Not visible. Work to process color. They only see colors. They are most sensitive to one of three colors; red, green, or blue. Together they are able to differ what they see to form millions of other colors. Those without functioning cones experience color blindness.

-Optic Nerve Not visible. Acts as the messenger in the back part of your eye. It carries the information it sees to the brain for understanding.

-Lachrymal Glands Tears These glands produce tears for flushing foreign bodies from the eyes. This fluid is regulated by blinking.

Your eyes do so much; protect them and SEE how great they really are!

Looking For a Good Steak Restaurant

Ruth Chris

Millions of Americans love to go to a good steak restaurant. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the amount of steak consumed every year is about 70 pounds per person. Most of that is consumed outside of the house.

There are a lot of steakhouses out there boasting to be the best. There are nationwide franchises and homegrown one-branch favorites. Several factors come into play when looking for a good restaurant. Some of them, ambiance for instance, are relative to the individual food lover. Others can be used to size up any steak-serving joint.

First, there is the establishment itself. Is it clean? Are the fixtures and furniture well maintained? Can the bathrooms accommodate enough people so that there’s no line outside?

The second factor for evaluation is service. A good steak house should be warm and welcoming. Quick yet polite servers do wonders in raising a restaurant’s popularity. Plus points if the restaurant has a sommelier to recommend exactly the right kind of red wine would go with one’s steak dinner. The restaurant should also be able to deliver customer-specific orders. When someone says they want a rare steak, medium-rare just isn’t going to cut it.

And of course, lastly there is the steak itself. No self-respecting steak restaurant can serve a just-average steak. It would have to be good enough to keep customers coming back for more. Steak houses can have different gimmicks to draw in their customers, but a great steak is the best draw of all.

NASCAR Race Legend – Curtis Turner

Ruth Chris

Curtis Turner was one of NASCAR’s early drivers. He was wide open and fearless and many saw him as one of the best of all time. He was born in Floyd County, Virginia in the middle of the bootlegging era, so it was natural for him to become a part of it.

A familiar story, Curtis learned to drive before he was ever old enough to have a license and started exporting moonshine early. He became quite a legend at it and is known for the talent he developed while driving ‘shine. He once lined up several jars of moonshine on a remote road in the hills of Virginia, and proceeded to maneuver a Cadillac between them. He slid the car backward and was able to do a 180 between them without knocking even one over. This move became known as the “Bootlegger Turn”. Curtis then got out of the car and drawled: “It was easy. I couldn’t waste all the good liquor”.

From the very beginning, Curtis Turner showed off his talent no matter what vehicle he happened to be in. He’d drive the family car, work truck, or an airplane-it didn’t matter to him. His real racing career began in 1946 when he entered a race on a small track in Mount Airy, NC. He finished 18th out of 18 drivers, but that didn’t deter him. He turned right around and entered another race and won first place.

He had begun the business of becoming the best dirt track driver of all time. In the early 50′s, Turner began driving for Oldsmobile and gained the nickname the “Blond Blizzard of Virginia”. A few years later, he switched to Ford and became known as “Pops” because of his amazing ability to ‘pop’ drivers in the back and out of his way. He was the first NASCAR driver appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the caption: “The Babe Ruth of Stock Car Racing”.

Curtis never ran a full schedule so he never won a Cup Championship, but his aggressive driving style and determination made him famous none the less. He also became known for his love of drinking and partying. Sometimes he would show up at the track after a hard night of partying without a wink of sleep-but that didn’t seem to affect his driving. He accomplished several records during his time in racing. In 1950 he was the first driver to win a race by two laps after leading every lap of the race.

At Weaverville in 1956, the race was red flagged after every car had wrecked or broken-except Curtis Turner’s. He won by default. He also beat out the pole sitter Speedy Thompson at the Southern 500, winning by two laps. In qualifying for the Daytona 500 in 1967, Curtis became the first to break the 180 mph speed barrier with a speed of 180.831 mph.

Curtis Turner’s driving career came to an end while he was driving for Smokey Yunick and suffered a hard wreck at Atlanta. It was a horrific crash and Curtis was badly shaken, but not seriously hurt. Smokey however couldn’t bear the thought of what might have happened. He withdrew his Chevrolet entry immediately leaving Curtis without a ride. “I’m not going to build the car that Curtis Turner gets killed in,” Smokey said.

Curtis wasn’t only a success on the racetrack, but he also made a fortune in buying and selling timberlands. In 1959 he found a piece of property near Charlotte, NC and came up with a scheme to build a racetrack. He spent almost every penny he had to start Charlotte Motor Speedway (now Lowe’s) but was edged out by his investors shortly after the track opened. Left with no money and no racetrack, Curtis hit rock bottom. He had been banned from NASCAR earlier after trying to organize a union and even though he was later allowed to return to the track, he only came out of retirement now and then to race when the price was right. He had planned to race in the National 500 at Charlotte in 1970, but his plane crashed on a mountainside in Pennsylvania, killing Curtis and a passenger.

Foxes and Hedgehogs – Which Are You?

Ruth Chris

Being a ‘generalist’ (or what some would call a ‘fox’), I have often been criticized for the fact that I pursue so many different careers, studies, subjects and interests. If I have heard “focus, focus, focus” once, I have actually heard it dozens of times. The Fox and the Hedgehog parable describes the daily encounter between the fox and the hedgehog.

The cunning fox has many ideas of ways to wage a sneak attack on the hedgehog. As the fox bounds toward him, the hedgehog thinks, “Here we go again. Will he ever learn?” He – as always – rolls up into a sphere of sharp spikes and the fox, seeing this defense calls off his attack.

In 1953, Sir Isaiah Berlin wrote, “There is a line among the fragments of the Greek poet Archilochus which says: ‘The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing’. Scholars have differed about the correct interpretation of these dark words, which may mean no more than that the fox, for all his cunning, is defeated by the hedgehog’s one defense. But, taken figuratively, the words can be made to yield a sense in which they mark one of the deepest differences which divide writers and thinkers, and, it may be, human beings in general.

“For there exists a great chasm between those, on one side (i.e. the hedgehogs), who relate everything to a single central vision … and those (i.e. the foxes) who lead lives, perform acts, and entertain ideas that are centrifugal rather than centripetal, their thought is scattered or diffused …”

In the past few months I have been reading Jim Collins’ Good to Great in which he writes about the ‘Hedgehog Concept’ – “A Hedgehog Concept is not a goal to be the best, a strategy to be the best, and intention to be the best, a plan to be the best. It is an understanding of what you can be the best at. The distinction is absolutely crucial.”

Ralph Estling wrote, “There is a third category, which Berlin doesn’t mention because, I guess, it’s so awfully rare, which includes people like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Thomas Jefferson, who combine in their natures both fox and hedgehog. Home run sluggers are strictly hedgehogs, while the little guys who regularly poke scratch singles through all parts of the infield, get to first base on bunts, and make it a habit to steal second, are your foxes. Babe Ruth was your quintessential hedgehog. Wee Willie Keeler, who ‘just hit em where they ain’t,’ was your fox par excellence. Politicians and popes are almost always foxes, economists and saints almost without exception hedgehogs.

“A world run by experts would be a disaster. Unless the hedgehog is also a fox, the specialist also a pretty fair generalist, Earth is doomed if ruled by experts. And if we can’t have the combination of fox and hedgehog (and we almost certainly can’t, it is much too improbable) and must choose only the one, let it be the good generalist, the all-rounder.”

Douglas Adams wrote, “If somebody thinks they’re a hedgehog, presumably you just give ‘em a mirror and a few pictures of hedgehogs and tell them to sort it out for themselves.”

So what do you think? And which are you?

Baseball Strength Training During The "Dead-Ball" Era

The teachings of baseball instruction and baseball strength training before the 1920s were crucial in the beginning years of America’s pastime. In a time when homeruns were not nearly as popular as they have been in the last ten years, the “dead ball” era was a time of brilliant coaches using chess type baseball strategies and specific strength training. Before the emergence of Babe Ruth, hit and run plays, sacrifice flies, bunts, and stolen bases ruled the game of baseball.

Baseball strength training was of major importance for the game. Keep in mind this was a day and age when you could turn that chopper to the second basemen into a single with the utilization of speed. Why? During this time the technology had not evolved yet and baseball gloves did not make it as easy to field a play as in the game today. This gave runners with a good baseball strength training more opportunities of running it out for a single and it was evident around 1910 when batting averages were inflating around the league.

Players like Ty Cobb, even though not well liked by both players and fans because of his dirty play, was the epitome of a player with speed during this era. In consecutive years, Cobb’s batting averages were .420 and .410, leaving the infamous “Shoeless” Joe Jackson with a .408 average as the only other player during the “dead ball” era to hit a .400 batting average or better besides Ty Cobb. Many fans loved the new thrust in hits due to the new structured baseballs each league was provided. Baseball training has taken a different shape too.

Of course, when the batters are happy, the pitchers are not, simply because their earned run averages skyrocketed as batting averages did at the same time. Discussions, such as scuffed balls and using the same ball for the majority of the game, was common in those days, which is partially why it is hard to determine who are the best players at each position. Different rules for different times continue leaving us to wonder what might have been had players of today played in the early 1900s or vice versa.

After scoring started declining again from 1914-1919, the game actually suffered the chance of falling into a tailspin as World War I, for the United States, brought many players to war. With the Influenza Epidemic, during that time, around the world caused great concern for the game and thus the “dead ball” era was gone. What once was a game full of baseball strength training attributes and great baseball instruction from coaches turned into a homerun love fest.

Within the next decade, the baseball world would dream about playing the game as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx did hitting homeruns galore and becoming icons of the game. The baseball world got it right, turning the game into a scoring fest as the world fell apart around it. It makes you wonder where players like Babe Ruth would have ended up on the all time homerun list had he spent his entire career playing in between 1903 and 1919 when the “dead ball” era was king.

Top Horror Movies, Ghost Movies

Ruth Chris

Personally I love being scared silly and a spine tingling ghost movie works for me. Of all the top horror movies genre out there like; vampires, zombies, killer tomatoes, the eerie, transparent ghoul that is floating around the room and whispering warnings to you in the dark, ghost movies are the best!

The love for a good ghost movie came about for me at a tender young age…thanks to two cousins!

It was a crisp fall day when I, at an impressionable age of eight or nine was dropped off at my grandparent’s farm for a weekend stay.

My bratty two older cousins were staying there also. For sleeping, the three of us shared two feather mattress beds in the open basement of the old farmhouse.

That was where I experienced my first ghost story. In the silent darkness my cousins told me a spine tingling story that “actually” happened not too far away. A tale worthy of being one of the top horror movies ever. They began in detail, a story about a kid, my age, getting his head chopped in half with an ax by his crazy grandfather. The poor ghoulish kid with half a bloody head now roams the countryside.

I never slept a wink that night. In fact it was a good while before I slept at my grandparent’s farmhouse again.

Halloween is near, enough of the vampire genre! That is why this article is about the eeriest, scariest ghost movies, twelve of them! Put in chronological order from oldest to newest and worth watching in this order. Notice how the older ghost movies were remade.

1) The Uninvited (1944)

A brother and sister move into an old seaside mansion. Bought very cheaply and came with a sinister past is now haunted.

Starring: Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, Donald Crisp, Gail Russell.

2009 – The new ghost movie has a very different storyline. Hair standing straight scary never the less.

Starring: Emily Browning, David Strathaim, Elizabeth Banks.

2) House On Haunted Hill (1959)

Eccentric multimillionaire and his wife invite five unrelated strangers to a huge, isolated mansion. They offer 10,000 dollars to each guest if they make it through the night (12 hours). All five arrive by hearse and in the morning all five will be leaving by hearse, one-way or the other.

Starring: Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long.

The new 1999 movie has the same story line, slightly altered like one million dollars instead of 10,000 and of course better special effects.

Starring: Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Chris Katten.

3) 13 Ghosts (1960) Out of all the top horror movies this ghost movie is one of the best. Uncle Zorba, an occultist, wills a huge unusual house to his needy nephew Cyrus and his family. This house came with three surprises; treasure, thirteen ghosts and special goggles to see these ghosts.

Starring: Charles Herbert, Donald Woods, Jo Morrow.

2001 version has the same story line, with creative well done effects and Cyrus is the uncle’s name.

Starring: Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth, F. Murray Abraham.

4) Carnival Of Souls (1962)

A ghostly man appears through mirrors at first only to an innocent church organist. Did someone or something at the deserted carnival prompt this ghoulish image which keeps appearing to this poor girl? Even though this is a low budget movie it still merits a decent level on the fright meter.

Starring: Candace Hilligoss, Frances Feist, Sidney Berger.

1998 version was much more brutal with a not so funny circus clown.

Starring: Bobbie Phillips, Shawnee Smith.

5) The Haunting (1963)

An old mansion called Hill House gives paranormal proof to Dr. Markway and his invited guests. The good story line made this a spooky movie.

Starring: Julie Harris, Richard Johnson, Claire Bloom.

1999 movie has the same story line only its Dr. Marrow, a high standard cast and great movie magic.

Starring: Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, Lili Taylor.

6) The Fog (1980)

One hundred years ago a ship carrying lepers purposely crashed drowning all on board. Now the ghoulish lepers are back for revenge and coming through the fog. John Carpenter can certainly put together a great ghost movie, not only once but twice.

Starring: Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Houseman.

2005- Very similar to the 1980 version but with better effects. Mr. Carpenter has also become more successful in the last twenty five years.

Starring: Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair.

7) Witchboard (1986)

College students start playing with an Ouija board that becomes evil. Meanwhile they were all thinking it was the spirit of a nice ten year old boy.

Starring: Todd Allen, Tawny Kitaen, Clare Bristol.

8) The Sixth Sense (1999)

In this subtle ghost movie, nine-year old Cole Sear can see, hear and talk to dead people right after they pass on. Dr. Crowe, a child psychologist tries to help Cole with these…hallucinations. I love movies that have a good twist ending and this is one of them. Definitely one of the top horror movies.

Starring: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette.

9) The St. Francisville Experiment (1999)

In a little town in Louisianna is a known haunted house. The house is haunted by the ghosts of slaves who died enduring horrible torture.Four people are unprepared for the horrors that are about to occur.

Starring: Tim Baldini, Madison Charap, Paul Palmer.

10) What Lies Beneath (2000)

The wife of an university scientist begins to see apparitions. Her husband thinks that she is nuts until he sees the images for himself. Now, they must both uncover the truth and find out what lies beneath.

Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Katharine Towne, James Remar.

11) Ghost Ship (2002)

This is a ‘better get ready to hang on to something’ ghost movie. I would consider this as one of the top horror movies. A 1962 elite passenger ship was suddenly found floating adrift by a salvage crew, forty years later. Old, rusted, deserted, full of gold and ghosts.

Starring: Gabriel Byrne, Julianna Margulies, Ron Eldard, Isaiah Washington.

12) The Ring (2002)

A strange video tape with eerie footage that seems to kill the viewer in seven days. Seconds after the video ends, a phone call, one week later you die a horrible death. Originally a 1998 Japanese film called ‘Ringu”. I had to add this flick to the top horror movies list.

Starring: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Jane Alexander.

You want to be frightened this Halloween season? My recommendation for a great scary ghost movie is any one of these twelve films. They are all worthy to be on the ‘top horror movies’ list.

So after the costumed kids are done ringing your doorbell and threatening you for treats, grab a pillow to hang on to, turn off all the lights and put on one of these scary movies. Great way to end Halloween.

Happy Halloween, Cinema Serge.
